What score should you target?

The score weighs your copy the way real content filters do: severe scam-associated phrases count far more than everyday sales language, repeating one word matters less than stacking different trigger phrases, and hype packed into your subject line or a short passage is riskier than the same words spread through longer copy. Word choice is only one input, though. Authentication, sender reputation, and list health matter even more, and this tool cannot see them.

90+Cold outreach and transactional email. Unknown senders get the least benefit of the doubt, so aim for zero high-risk flags and at most one or two mediums.
75+Promotions to your own list. A sale email will always use some sales language. Keep every high-risk flag out and let a handful of mediums stand where the copy needs them.
Below 60Rework before sending. At this level the flagged language itself reads like spam to both filters and readers, whatever your sender reputation.

How this checker works, and why you can trust the number

Major providers use machine learning (ML), not word lists

Gmail and Outlook decide where your email lands with ML systems built on thousands of signals: your domain's sending reputation, its authentication records, and how recipients react, including opens, replies, and "report spam" clicks. The authentication records they check are SPF (Sender Policy Framework), DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail), and DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting and Conformance). There is no fixed list of banned words at that layer, and any tool claiming a word score predicts inbox placement is overselling.

So why check words at all?

Two reasons. A lot of business mail still passes through content filters (SpamAssassin and similar, common at company mail servers) that genuinely do score words and patterns. And spammy language pushes human readers to delete or report your email, and complaint rate is one of the strongest signals the ML filters watch. Word choice is the piece of deliverability you can fix in five minutes.

Our hybrid scoring approach

Instead of counting "bad words," this tool scores copy the way real content filters weigh it. Scam-associated phrases count far more than everyday sales language. Repeating one word counts less than stacking different trigger phrases. Hype in your subject line, or packed into a single passage, costs more than the same words spread through longer copy. And no amount of extra length can water down a genuinely spammy phrase.

Where the word list comes from

We merged the published spam-trigger lists of nine independent deliverability and email-marketing sources, including Mailchimp, Twilio SendGrid, ActiveCampaign, Campaign Monitor, Mailjet, GlockApps, and an open-source dataset. Every term was then reviewed one by one: outdated folklore was cut, and each surviving term was tiered by severity. Last reviewed July 2026.
